 Seasonal Fabric wreaths

Fabric and Rag Wreathes

I’ve always found joy in fresh flowers and lush greenery, but unfortunately most varieties send my allergies into overdrive! This forced me to get creative when I first looked into creating wreaths, and so I decided that as flowers were out of the question, I would use fabric instead.

  • Little did I know that I was stepping into a world of endless possibilities, and the incredible variety of textures and materials on offer sparked a whole new creative journey.
  • Fabric is available for all occasions – Halloween, Christmas, Valentines Day, etc – as well as coming in many beautiful combinations of colour.
  • I mix and match different fabrics in each wreath, so each and every one is individually designed.
  • Lace, ribbon and other embellishments can be added too, adding extra depth and texture.

I use biodegradable straw rings with fabric remnants gathered from family, friends and online. I also make Victorian style rag wreaths, using wire frames and strips of material. Whatever option you choose, my wreathes are completely water-resistant.

I do not use adhesive with the straw ring wreaths, so pieces of material can be removed and you can design your own.

How to make your own Straw Ring Wreath

You will need:

  • A straw wreath form (It’s best to leave it in its shrink wrap/wrapping, it will be more durable)
  • Approximately 1 metre of cotton fabric (this can be one colour or a variety of designs)
  • Screwdriver/pencil
  • Scissors or rotary cutter

Instructions:

  • Cut the fabric into squares; aim for 2 ½ inch (this is just a guide; the squares don’t need to be exact each time and they can be bigger or smaller…it depends how big you want the ‘petals’ to be)
  • Use the screwdriver (or I’d suggest a pencil for children) to “punch” the fabric into the straw of the wreath.
  • Use the tip of the screwdriver/pencil to place the centre of the square next to the previous one - this way you get an overlapped effect as you progress.
  • Cover the sides, so that the straw ring is not visible when it’s hanging.
  • Use a ribbon looped around the top so the wreath hangs nicely.
